    Det påstås i muntlige kilder at Marcus Bernhoft var en adelsmann fra Tyskland, og at han som oberst hadde øverste befalet nordenfjelds.

    Senere ble han lensmann/lensherre over Tronheims len.

    Videre står det at han skal ha blitt veldig gammel, 100 år, og ble begravet med stor prakt i byen.

    Han skal ha hatt en søster som først var abedisse i et nonnekloster, men som siden antok den lutherske religion.
