    Nikolai Hoff gikk på privatskole i Gudbrandsdalen og deretter på middelskole i Farsund. Som gymnasiast var han elev ved Kristiandsand katedralskole (Latinskolen), hvor han tok examen artium i 1902.

    Etter studiene var han først dommerfullmektig i Namsos 1908-1910, deretter advokatfullmektig i Kristiania og departementssekretær i Kirkedepartementet.

    Den samme adressen er han oppført med i adresseboka for Kristiania i 1918, da som assessor ved byretten.

    Occupation:
    I 1916 ble Hoff dommer i Kristiania byrett, hvor han forble yrkeskarrieren ut.

    I 1931 var Hoff konstituert lagmann i Borgarting og Agder, og 1936-1838 var han tilkalt ekstraordinær dommer i Høyesterett.

    Hoff skrev en rekke juridiske artikler i dagspressen og i tidsskrifter. I 1932 utga han boken Ubestemte dommer.

    Fra 1945 til han gikk av med pensjon i 1954 var han byrettsjustitiarius, altså byrettens leder. Blant hans første og største oppgaver som justitiarius var organiseringen av landssvikoppgjøret ved Oslo byrett i 1945.
