Anna ville trolove seg med selveiende bonde av god ætt, Samson Kjerland, men han ble ikke funnet god nok som ektemann til prestedatteren. Anna rømte til Kjerland i trass, men presteenken (hennes mor) gikk rettens vei og fikk medhold i at jenta skulle reise tilbake til moren sin.
