Lucille Olivia (Linge) Christian, 87, of Story City, died Friday, Oct. 29, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a brief fight with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.
Lucille was born April 2, 1917, in Baltic, S.D., to John and Martha (Roarson) Linge. She graduated in 1935 from Lyons High School in Lyons, S.D. Her mother had passed away in 1934, so she stayed home to help take care of the family until 1940. She then attended Eastern State Normal School in Madison, S. D., and received a one-year teaching certificate. From 1941 until 1943, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Dell Rapids, S.D. In 1943, Lucille joined the Marine Corps Women's Reserves where she trained pilots in instrument navigation using a link trainer. From 1946 to 1949, she attended Iowa State University where she received her bachelor of science degree in home economics. Following her graduation she worked for a short time at a gas company in Pittsburg, Kan., before marrying Earl Christian of Roland on Jan. 10, 1950.
Earl and Lucille farmed between Roland and Story City. She worked for R.H. Donnelly's and Iowa State University before retiring from the National Animal Disease Laboratory in Ames in 1980.
Lucille enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, gardening, antiquing, attending auctions, traveling, watching ISU sports (especially basketball), following current events and politics and quilting.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and nine brothers and sisters, Tunice Linge, Ruth Hoiness, Marvin Linge, Hazel Berg, George Linge, Johnny Linge, Fletcher Linge, Dagny Robinson and Maymie Carlson.
She is survived by one sister, Pearl Nelson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers-in-law, Herman Berg of Fort Worth, Texas and Dean Carlson of Loveland, Colo.; her children, Edgar and wife Jaynee of Story City, Mardell of Story City, Russell and wife Lois of Fridley, Minn. and Brian and wife Sheryl of Fremont, Calif.; three grandsons, Erik Christian and Andrew Christian of Ames and Jonas Christian of Fremont, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.
