15 Dec 1916 |
Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey, USA [1] |
- Heart broken over the tragic death of his wife just a month and a day before, Carl Wrege of 21 Roosevelt Avenue died at his home Saturday morning as the result of a stroke of apoplexy brought about by grief for his wife.
Aug. 24 last Mr. and Mrs. Wrege, both in perfect health, left home for a two weeks' vacation at a farmhouse near Newfoundland. Ten days after arriving at Newfoundland, Mrs. Wrege, while helping the farmer's wife dry some dishes stumbled over a pail on the kitchen floor and plunged head long down a flight of cellar stairs breaking her neck and dying almost instantly, Mr. Wrege was heart broken over the accident, and after returning to Jersey City he seemed unable to rally from the shock. His health failed rapidly and he spent most of his time sitting at home brooding over the death of his wife.
At 6:20 Saturday morning he was stricken with apoplexy and died at 7 o'clock, without having regained consciousness. Mr. Wrege was 67 years old, and his wife was one year his junior.
The couple had been married 45 years and they had been inseparable.
Mr. Wrege has always been engaged in the florist business and his wife was his business partner. The Wreges opened a shop at the foot of Magnolia Avenue, but 35 years ago moved the business to Roosevelt Avenue.
Eleven children all were born to the couple, but only two survive. They are George and Mary Wrege. They are continuing the florist business.
Funeral services for Mr. Wrege will be held from his late home tomorrow afternoon. Rev. C. E. Poensgen, pastor of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, will officiate and interment will be made in New York Bat Cemetery.
