    Hugenotter er betegnelsen på tilhengerne av den reformerte lære i Frankrike. Hugenottene baserte sin kirke på Jean Calvins lære.

    Ordet hugenott (fransk huguenot) stammer fra 1500-tallet og skal visstnok være avledet av det tyske Eidgenosse (forbundsfelle), på grunn av båndene til den sveitsiske reformasjon.

    Protestantiske menigheter – først lutherske, senere kalvinistiske – hadde vokst i antall og størrelse i Frankrike, og midt på 1500-tallet var det tydelig at protestantismen hadde slått rot i landet. Det skjedde både i de lavere klasser og hos adelen, og blant de sistnevnte var det noen som mente at den nye trosretningen kunne hjelpe dem i deres politiske foretak. Protestantismen ble sett på som en trussel mot den katolske kirkes og kongedømmets stilling. Protestantene i Frankrike kaltes hugenotter. De ble forfulgt av katolske krefter, og tidvis hersket krigstilstand mellom hugenotter og katolikker.

    Først ble ordet hugenotter brukt som skjellsord av motstanderne, men senere ble det tatt i bruk av hugenottene selv.

    Hugenottene ble forfulgt av de franske kongene og andre katolske makthavere. En massakre på en hugenottisk menighet i Vassay i 1562 gav støtet til en 30-årig religionskrig i Frankrike. Den verste hendelsen i denne krigen er kjent som Bartolomeusnatten.

    På begynnelsen av 1570-tallet var hugenottlederen admiral Coligny blitt enkedronning Katarinas farligste politiske rival. Katarina bestemte seg for å la en attentatsmann ta livet av admiralen, som i stillingen som kongens minister hadde fått adskillig innflytelse over kongen og truet Katarinas makt i landet. Attentatet skjedde den 22. august 1572. Coligny ble truffet av to skudd, men overlevde. For endelig å ta livet av Coligny, og for å skjule sin delaktighet i det mislykkede attentatet, påstod Katarina overfor kongen at hugenottene planla å gjøre opprør og ta livet av kongen og hele hans familie. Admiralen og ledende hugenotter måtte derfor tas av dage. Kongen lot seg til slutt overbevise og forlangte deretter at alle hugenotter skulle utryddes.

    Dette skjedde under festlighetene etter vielsen av Henrik av Navarra (senere Henrik IV av Frankrike) og Margrete av Valois. Henrik var protestant og hovedmann for huset Bourbon. Mange av Frankrikes hugenotter var kommet til Paris for å overvære vielsen av mannen som var deres nominelle leder. Bruden var datter av Katarina av Medici som var katolikk, mor til kong Karl 9. av Frankrike og en mektig politisk skikkelse i landet.

    Førstkommende natt – natten før bartolomeusdag 1572 – begynte det forferdelige blodbadet. Byportene ble stengt for å hindre folk i å flykte fra byen. Katolske borgere ble bevæpnet og styrker ble utplassert i bydelene. Morderpøbelen gikk fra hus til hus der hugenotter bodde og drepte menneskene – også barna. Det var en orgie i drap, og etter to dager med myrderier i Paris spredte det seg til provinsene. Til stattholderne var det sendt ut ordre om å drepe alle ledende kalvinister. Admiral Coligny var også blant ofrene, men brudgommen – Henrik av Navarra – ble skånet. Katarina tenkte at hun gjennom ham kunne få kontroll over de hugenotter som måtte overleve. Historikere regner med at mellom 1 000 og 2 000 ble drept i Paris og ytterligere 8 000–10 000 ved etterspillet i provinsene.

    Hugenottene ble etter dette helt rettsløse i Frankrike. Tidligere toleranseedikter ble gjort ugyldige.

    Med Henrik 4 av Navarra kom hugenottenes leder på Frankrikes trone. Selv om han av politiske grunner gikk over til den romersk-katolske kirken 1593, gav han hugenottene delvis religionsfrihet.

    Ediktet i Nantes gav i 1598 hugenottene visse fristeder. Senere ble de igjen utsatt for sterkt press fra den franske kongen, og i 1685 ble ediktet i Nantes opphevet. Mellom 200 000 og 250 000 hugenotter emigrerte på grunn av forfølgelsene. Særlig dro de til Sveits og mange stater i dagens Tyskland (hovedsakelig Brandenburg-Preussen, som de kom til å sette et sterkt preg på), England, Nederland og Nord-Amerika. Denne utvandringen var et stort tap for Frankrike, ettersom hugenottene var dyktige borgere.
    Først ved den franske revolusjon i 1789 fikk hugenottene fulle borgerrettigheter.

    På 1800-tallet oppstod konfesjonelle stridigheter blant de franske hugenotter, og etter atskillelsen av kirke og stat 1905 ble den reformerte kirke delt i to, én konservativ og én liberal. I 1938 sluttet de fleste kalvinistene seg sammen i Den franske reformerte kirke.
