    Nils begynte sine medisinstudier i Oslo høsten 1953. Planen var å bli lege som faren Alex. I november 1955 var han oppe til første avdeling av sin medisinske eksamen, og skulle være ferdig med den til jul.

    Dog hoppet han av medisinstudiet i 1957 til fordel for ingeniørstudiet.

    Alex Brinchmann skrev i desember 1957 at Nils nå hadde bestemt seg for ingeniørstudiet. Fortiden arbeidet han på et bygg for å opparbeide praktiskarbeide til studiet.

    Når faren skrev 5.juni året etter, var Nils underveis i studiene sine ved NTH i Trondheim.

    Rundt juletider 1962 var Nils diplom-ingeniør.
