    Ruth M. Hoiness, 90

    Ruth M. Hoiness died June 9, 1998, at the Dell Rapids Community Nursing Home.

    Ruth M. was born August 23, 1907, at Galva, Iowa, to parents John and Martha Linge. She moved with her parents to the Baltic area in 1917 where she attended the Willow Creek Country School. She later graduated from Lyons High School.

    Ruth married Chris Hoiness September 3, 1927, in Sioux Falls. After their marriage they lived and farmed in the Colton area until retiring into Colton in 1968. Chris died June 7, 1974.

    Ruth was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the ladies aid, the quilting group at the church and the Colton Senior Citizens. Ruth M. died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at the Dell Rapids Community Nursing Home.

    Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters; Mrs. Leland (Bernice) Nelson, Sioux Falls, Mrs. Paul (Carol) Grinde, Colton; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Hoiness, Colton; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters: Lucille Christian, Story City, Iowa; Pearl Nelson, Sioux Falls; and many other relatives and friends.

    She was preceded in death by a son, Curtis, on March 18, 1997, four brothers and three sisters.

    Services were held June 11, 1998, at First Lutheran Chruch, Colton, with Rev. Steve Martens officiating. Sharyl Hass was organist. Casket bearers were Ted Linge, Ken Winterson, Edgar Christian, Don Nelson, Marlin Ebers and Russell Christian.

    Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Colton, with Minnehaha Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

    Lucille Olivia (Linge) Christian, 87, of Story City, died Friday, Oct. 29, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a brief fight with cancer.
    Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.

    Lucille was born April 2, 1917, in Baltic, S.D., to John and Martha (Roarson) Linge. She graduated in 1935 from Lyons High School in Lyons, S.D. Her mother had passed away in 1934, so she stayed home to help take care of the family until 1940. She then attended Eastern State Normal School in Madison, S. D., and received a one-year teaching certificate. From 1941 until 1943, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Dell Rapids, S.D. In 1943, Lucille joined the Marine Corps Women's Reserves where she trained pilots in instrument navigation using a link trainer. From 1946 to 1949, she attended Iowa State University where she received her bachelor of science degree in home economics. Following her graduation she worked for a short time at a gas company in Pittsburg, Kan., before marrying Earl Christian of Roland on Jan. 10, 1950.

    Earl and Lucille farmed between Roland and Story City. She worked for R.H. Donnelly's and Iowa State University before retiring from the National Animal Disease Laboratory in Ames in 1980.
    Lucille enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, gardening, antiquing, attending auctions, traveling, watching ISU sports (especially basketball), following current events and politics and quilting.

    Lucille was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and nine brothers and sisters, Tunice Linge, Ruth Hoiness, Marvin Linge, Hazel Berg, George Linge, Johnny Linge, Fletcher Linge, Dagny Robinson and Maymie Carlson.

    She is survived by one sister, Pearl Nelson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers-in-law, Herman Berg of Fort Worth, Texas and Dean Carlson of Loveland, Colo.; her children, Edgar and wife Jaynee of Story City, Mardell of Story City, Russell and wife Lois of Fridley, Minn. and Brian and wife Sheryl of Fremont, Calif.; three grandsons, Erik Christian and Andrew Christian of Ames and Jonas Christian of Fremont, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

    Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.
    Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is in charge of arrangements.

    Pearl Nelson, age 86, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Hartford, died on Friday, October 8, 2010, at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Funeral Services will begin at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at Benton Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M. Monday, with the family present from 6-8:00 P.M. at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.

    Pearl Josephine Nelson was born on June 29, 1924, to John and Martha (Roarson) Linge at Baltic. She grew up near Baltic and graduated from Lyons High School in 1941. On March 18, 1944, Pearl married Vernon Nelson at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, rural Dell Rapids. They enjoyed 57 years together. They farmed near Hartford until moving into Sioux Falls in 1983. Pearl worked as a waitress for 38 years at various restaurants including 25 years at the Rolling Pin until retiring in 1999. Vernon died on September 7, 2001. Pearl was a member of Benton Lutheran Church and the Norse Glee Club Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, baking goodies, spending time with her family, and traveling.

    Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Rev. Janet Zoss of Sioux Falls, Kathleen (fiance, Bob Mathiesen) Eisenberg of Sioux Falls and Linda (Marlin) Elbers of Steen, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren, Lisa (Ken) Tschetter, Jennifer Zoss, Mary Zoss, LeaAnn Nicholson, Julie (Stacy) Hebb, Brenda Brokenleg, Daniel (Andrea) Eisenberg, Kristi (Daniel) DeGroff, Stacy (TJ) Schmidtke, Jeremy Elbers, and Sonya Elbers; sixteen great-grandchildren, Margaret, Lucy, Grace, and Sophia Tschetter, Allison Elliot, Victoria and Ethan Olson, Kaitlyn and Kassidy Hebb, Miles Brokenleg, Victoria, Evan, and Graham Eisenberg, Hannah and Malachi DeGroff, and Koby Nagel; two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.     Theodore Gaylon Linge, age 73, of Baltic, died on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Dougherty House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, rural Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M. Friday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids, with the family present from 5-7:30 P.M.

    Ted was born on May 10, 1936, at Dell Rapids, South Dakota, to Tunice and Delia (Nesheim) Linge. He grew up in the Lyons area and at the very young age of 5, he began helping his father farm by cultivating corn with a "H" John Deere. He attended school in Lyons and graduated from Lyons High School in 1954. He served in the Air National Guard and worked in the Chester area as a farm hand and driving truck. On August 2, 1963, Ted married Joyce Persing in Chester. Following their marriage, Ted farmed in the Baltic area.

    Ted was a lifetime servant of God at Willow Creek Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He served on the church council and helped build and remodel several areas of the church. He restored antique tractors, starting with a 1929 Hart Parr. The color of the tractor never mattered much to Ted, as he also restored Minneapolis Molines, but his favorite was always his original "H" John Deere. He helped start the Minneapolis Moline Siouxland Collectors and the Willow Creek Threshers. He greatly enjoyed the company of his friends and anyone who would share a cup of coffee with him, but most of all his greatest pride and joy was his family.

    Marlene D. Nelson, 66, of Crooks died Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the Sanford Foundation Hospice Cottage.

    Funeral services will begin at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at West Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the West Nidaros Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the West Nidaros Cemetery.

    Marlene Linge was born May 15, 1943 in Dell Rapids to parents Tunice and Delia (Nesheim) Linge. She grew up west of Baltic and attended Lyons Grade School and graduated from Lyons High School in 1961.

    On June 22, 1963, she married Donald Nelson at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, Dell Rapids. After their marriage they moved to Crooks, where she raised her family and worked as the bookkeeper for the Crooks Farmers Elevator for many years.

    She was baptized and confirmed at Willow Creek Lutheran Church and was an active member of West Nidaros Lutheran Church. She loved to bake, go to car shows and shop for antiques.

    Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Don, Crooks; a son Craig Nelson and his wife Alissa, Baltic; a daughter, Brenda Miller and her husband Chris, Crooks; two grandchildren, Braeden Miller and Taylor Grace Nelson; a sister, Beverly (Ken) Winterton, Madison; and a brother, Delmer (Mardell) Linge, Panama City, Florida; and many other relatives and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Dennis and a brother, Theodore Linge.

    Memorials may be directed to the Sanford Hospice Cottage or West Nidaros Lutheran Church Building Fund.

    Jon Ian Berg died peacefully Wednesday morning, July 28, 2010, during his 72nd year, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

    Service: 1 p.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, 7900 McCart Ave. The Rev. Mark Moore, pastor of the church, will officiate.
    Jon's cremated remains will be placed privately in the columbarium in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

    Visitation: Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Great Room at Robertson Mueller Harper.
    Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to a charity of one's choice, honoring Jon's memory, is suggested.

    Born May 7, 1938, in Austin, Jon was the son of Herman and Hazel Linge Berg. In 1945 the family moved to Fort Worth where Jon graduated from Arlington Heights High School. After spending four years in the U.S. Navy, Jon joined IBM. He took early retirement in 1997 after receiving many honors from the company. Jon had many varied interests that included fishing, history, archeology and genealogy. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and loved his family.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Alice Marie; and a daughter, Monique Elizabeth.

    Survivors: In addition to his wife of 48 years, Linda Spurlock Berg, Jon is survived by his son, Erik; beloved grandchildren, whom he doted on, Trae and Brooke Ashley Berg; brother, Gary Berg and his wife, Linda, of Austin; sisters, Kay Berg of Wilmington, N.C., and Jo Ann Berg Megahan and her husband, Michael, of Francistown, Botswana; and nieces and nephews and their families.
