    Milit-Beg:
    Melvin ble innkalt til tjeneste i februar 1942. Etter endt opplæring ble han sendt til militærbasen Fort William McKinley utenfor Manila på Filippinene som radiooperatør og navigatør på rekognoseringsfly.

    I oktober 1943 fikk foreldrene beskjed om at flyet hans var blitt borte under et rekognoseringsoppdrag. Det var søkt etter flyet, men ikke funnet noen spor. Melvin var - missing in action - og dermed trolig død. Likevel ble han ikke erklært død før så sent som i 1946, og da kunne endelig familien arrangere en minnestund for han.
