    Da broren Athelstan døde i 939, overtok Edmund kongetittelen etter han.

    I 940 tapte han - the Five Boroughs - det danske Mercia - til danskene, men vant dette tilbake et par år senere, i 942.

    Han beseiret Eirik Blodøks og jagde vikingene fra Jorvik 941.

    Vant tilbake hele Northumbria i 944, og Cumbria året etter. Siste ga han til skottekongen Malcom for å få han som alliert.

    Knivstukket og drept av Leofa under et slagsmål ved Pucklechurch.

    Begravet i Glastonbury Abbey, Somersetshire.
