    Det var på returreisen fra Hamburg med stykkgods at skonnerten Neptunus, som var ute på sin første reise, kantret i en stormbyge utenfor - Drønen - og sank. Mannskapet reddet seg, men Fredrik Steenbuck Macé befant seg i kahytten da de kantret, og fulgte med skipet ned i dybet.

    Dette var et hardt slag for faren. Sorgen og forsøkene på å få skipet og sønnens lik opp, formørket hans siste leveår.
